Europe

RoHS refers to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electr(on)ic equipment, regulated by EU Directive 2002/95/EC and mandatory from 2006/06/01 and recasted by Directive 2011/65/EU on 2011/07/21. The latter directive requires the manufactuerer or entity placing a product on the EU market to comply with the "RoHS Directive" and maintain a dossier with compliance evidence (TCF), issue a DoC and apply the CE mark. Restrictions are specified for the following materials:

Lead (Pb): 0.1%
Mercury (Hg): 0.1%
Cadmium (Cd): 0.01%
Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+): 0.1%
Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): 0.1%
Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): 0.1%

With exceptions in Article 6, equipment categories 1-7 (Household-, IT-, Telecommunication-, Consumer-, lighting-, Electr(on)ic Tool-, Toys-, Leisure-, Sport-, Medical-, Monitor- and Control Equipment) 10 (Automatic dispensers) specified in Annex IA to Directive 2002/96/EC (WEEE), electric light bulbs and household luminaires. Non-mature new technologies, Military technologies, or cases where no better alternative is available, may receive exception to comply.
